Growth of S. flexneri with pyruvate as the carbon source. The S. flexneri wild type or mutants (eda, pfkAB, and pykAF mutants) were grown in minimal medium with glucose (A), pyruvate (B), or a mixture of glucose and pyruvate (C) as the carbon source. Cultures were grown at 37°C with aeration for 8 h, and growth was monitored by measuring OD650 (average; bars indicate 1 standard deviation).
