Schematic representation of the in vitro mechanical testing set up. The bone ball was placed between two cylindrical holders with concave surfaces. The holders are made of self-curing acrylic, and each has one flat surface and one concave surface. The concave surfaces created a bowl shape area about 1 mm in depth and provided stable and uniformly distributed loading between the bone ball and the holder; the flat surface secured the stable and solid contact between the holders and the loading piston or load cell.
