Stress‐induced effects on glucose and NEFA circulating levels. Plasma from stressed and control rats was isolated from whole blood after centrifugation. (A) Chronic stress is associated with increased circulating glucose levels. (D) NEFA plasma levels are elevated in stressed rats compared to controls. At the conclusion of the 35‐day stress protocol, rats were restrained and blood was collected from their tails at the described intervals and measured using an AccuCheck glucose counter. (B) Stressed rats show reduced ability to remove glucose from the circulation after a 2‐hr challenge (glucose 1 g/kg). Circulating glucose levels remain high 60 min after challenge in the stressed group (grey line). (C) Circulating insulin levels decreased with stressed compared to control rats.
