Physical exercise activates IGF-1/Akt signaling in the peri-infarct region after an ischemic stroke. (A) The expression of p-Akt/total-Akt, p-GSK-3β/GSK-3β, p-FKHR/FKHR (fork-head transcription factor) and IGF-1 in the peri-infarct region analyzed by western blotting. Protein expression levels were normalized with α-Tubulin; (B,C) Expression and quantification of IGF-1-positive cells in the peri-infarct region. IGF-1-positive cell count in the physical exercise group was significantly higher than that observed in the control group at days 7 and 14 after MCAO, while no disparity was observed between the groups at day 3 (** p < 0.01).
