Neural stem cells exist in the subventricular zone of adult humans. (red in panel (a). Proliferation of these neural stem cells increases after injury, and gives rise to a small number of new neurons (b). Mobilization of NSCs such as via administration of cytokines may further promote NSC proliferation, migration, differentiation and survival in rodent models of ischemia.
