The sequence of trial events in Experiment 1. Subjects viewed sequentially presented faces oriented 22.5° leftward (this example shows a set size containing four faces). Each face was presented for 50 ms with a 50-ms ISI. After the stimuli disappeared, the participant could access all 144 faces in the forward-facing stimulus array by scrolling the mouse left or right. The participant had unlimited time to choose the mean identity of the crowd via mouse scroll.
