Images of transverse planes from a representative animal in each group. Fractional gas content at end-expiration (FEE) and end-inspiration (FEI) as well as 18F-FDG net uptake rate (Ki) showed notable heterogeneity along the gravitational axis in both High-Strain groups. With High-Strain ventilation, Ki increased with LPS exposure, particularly in the dependent lung. Concentrated 18F-FDG uptake was not observed with protective ventilation (Low-Strain), where FEE and FEI were more homogeneous and LPS appeared to produce a small global increase in Ki.
