Results of automated behaviour analysis (HCS) during the period 15 to 1 day prior to euthanasia in the Hargreaves study (mean±SEM). (A) Tumour mice travelled significantly less distance overall (‘Group’, p = 0.017) and showed a pronounced decline over the 8 days before euthanasia (‘Group×Time’, p = 0.001). (B) Active behaviour showed a decline during the days preceding euthanasia (−3 to −1). (C) Tumour mice reared less over the entire 2 weeks prior to euthanasia than controls (‘Group’, p = 0.001) and (D) groomed more overall (‘Group’, p = 0.038), but more intensively so over the final 7 study days (‘Group×Time’, p = 0.048).
