Mechanisms of cardiac repair. Certain cells have the capacity for trilineage differentiation into cardiac myocytes, endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells. Fusion with adjoining host cells, paracrine signaling, and mobilization of endogenous stem cells are also critical and stimulate mechanisms for survival and proliferation of the host cells.
