Diethylpyrocarbonate (DEPC) counteracts Zn2+ chelation by cysteine. The F340/F380 ratio was measured in vitro in a solution containing 200 nM FuraZin-1, 100 mM KCl, and 50 mM PIPES, pH 7.2. Where indicated, 100 μM ZnCl2, 100 μM cysteine, and 1 mM DEPC were added to the solution; the Control shows data from an experiment without DEPC.
