A typical vertical ground reaction force curve showing the five identified phases for analysis. The pre-contact (PC) phase was defined as the 50ms before foot strike. The early contact (EC) phase was defined as the first 50ms after foot strike. Peak Push Off (PPO) phase was defined as 20% of the total stance phase (foot strike to toe off) centered about the local peak of the vertical ground reaction force near midstance. (Besier, et al., 2001) Weight acceptance (WA) phase was defined from the end of EC to the beginning of PPO, while Final Push Off (FPO) was defined from the end of PPO until toe off.
