Following acute pancreatitis, gut barrier failure and mucus loss are associated with chemical changes to the mucus layer. These changes include an increase in the amount of a) carbonyl derivatives, b) decreased mucus anti-oxidant neutralizing capacity as well as c) increased nitrotyrosine residues seen in the collected mucus. Data expressed as mean ± SEM with n=6 animals per group * p<0.01 vs. other groups, ** p<0.001 vs. other groups, + p<0.05 vs. other groups.
