Syncytium formation in different cell types. Avian cells or COS-7 cells were transfected with cDNAs encoding the F/F chimera protein (A, B, E, F) or the F/HR2F chimera protein (C, D, G, H) in the absence (A, C, E, G) or presence (B, D, F, H) of cDNA encoding the H/G chimera. At 48 h posttransfection, cells were fixed with paraformaldehyde and then stained with goat anti-RSV polyclonal antibody, and binding of antibody was detected with rabbit anti-goat antibody coupled to Alexa Fluor 568. Images were opened in Adobe Photoshop software using identical settings for all images.
