Transmission of reassortant viruses with the SH14 backbone. We inoculated groups of chickens intranasally and via the conjunctiva with 106 EID50 14-7(PA+HA) (A), 14-7(PA+HA+NP) (B), 14-7(PA+HA+NS) (C), or 14-7(PA+HA+NP+NS) (D). After 24 h of inoculation, three naive SPF chickens of the exposed group were placed in an adjacent cage as described in the text. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected 3, 5, 7, and 9 dpi. Viral titers of oropharyngeal swabs were determined by endpoint titration in SPF embryonated eggs. Each pattern bar represents the virus titers from an individual chicken.
