Potential modulators of the neuronal-neuroimaging signal relationships illustrated in Figure 1. When considering two neuroimaging targets, which may be: (1) different brain regions, (2) the same region in different subjects, (3) the same region in the same subject at different time points, or (4) the same region with before and after an experimental manipulation, it is important to consider the many possible differences between these targets that might affect the relationship between the measured hemodynamic and the inferred neuronal events.
