(a) HDP captures heme into a hydrophobic pocket. His122 and His175 are important for anchoring heme. His 172 and His197 also bring heme into proper alignment for the reaction. (b) A coordination bond between a heme propionate group and the iron of another heme dimer unit is formed. (c) HDP releases the heme dimer, serving as a seed for the crystal growth of Hz.
