Ab promotes phagocytosis of S. aureus. Phagocytosis (a) and bactericidal activity (b) of adherent PMNs were determined using opsonized (Ops.) and unopsonized (Unop.) S. aureus LAC (USA300) in the presence (1:1,000 or 1:100 dilutions as indicated) or absence (none) of αS. aureus. Alternatively, PMNs in suspension were assessed for their ability to phagocytose (c) and kill (d) S. aureus. Assays were performed using a CFU:PMN ratio of 1:1. Data represent the mean of 5 independent experiments ± SEM. * p < 0.05. NS = Nonsignificant.
