Synthesis algorithm and example results. (a) Schematic of synthesis procedure. Statistics are measured after a sound recording is passed through the auditory model of Fig. 1. Synthetic signal is initialized as noise, and the original sound's statistics are imposed on its cochlear envelopes. The modified envelopes are multiplied by their associated fine structure, and then recombined into a sound signal. The procedure is iterated until the synthesized signal has the desired statistics.
