Extracellular vesicles can be isolated from biological fluids such as bile from patients with cholangiocarcinoma using ultracentrifugation and other techniques. These extracellular vesicles may contain tumor specific proteins or RNA molecules that could provide signatures of the presence of underlying malignancy, and thereby serve as biomarkers of disease, or could have functional biological roles that contribute to the tumoral phenotype.
