Self-absorption can give rise to errors and artifacts in fluorescence tomography (as well as incorrect ratios of elements) if not corrected. Shown here is the self-absorption calculated for fluorescence from a number of biologically interesting elements due to varying thicknesses of a 25% generic protein/75% water mix representing the cytosol of a typical cell (Luby-Phelps, 2000).
