MiR-1 and miR-133a reside on the same gene, but they control opposing processes. MiR-133a is an inhibitor of serum response factor (SRF), which represses proliferation. MiR-1 represses histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4), which inhibits myocyte enhancer factor-2 (Mef-2), a promoter of myoblast differentiation. The Mef-2 family of transcription factors is utilized across many different pathways; therefore, expression may vary depending on other biological stimuli. MiR-206 inhibits Pax7, which, in turn, represses MyoD expression, a marker of cell differentiation. Generally, miR-133a promotes myoblast proliferation, and miR-1/miR-206 promote myoblast differentiation.
