Confluent monolayers of MDCK cells (2 × 106 cells) were exposed to various doses of variant Ia deletion mutants in the presence of 10 ng of wild-type Ia/ml and 500 ng of Ib/ml at 37°C. Cell rounding was recorded after 8 h. Cell rounding activity was scored as follows: +++, 80 to 100 % rounding; ++, 50 to 80% rounding; +, 20 to 40% rounding; −, no rounding. The experiments were repeated three times, and data from a representative experiment are shown.
