Methods Primary care
Random allocation of households to intervention and control groups
Participants Primary care screening, mean age 50 (40-59)
N=3941
Interventions Intensity of intervention depended on individual’s level of risk.
Nurse counselling on diet, weight, smoking, exercise, alcohol
Duration 1 year
Outcomes No clinical event outcomes
Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, blood cholesterol, smoking prevalence
Notes Two control groups used: internal to study used for comparisons in this review. Drop outs were more likely to have high CVD risk factor levels. Overall predicted risk reduction of 12% achieved but thought to be too costly in practice - no cost-effectiveness analysis conducted however
