Illustration of a strategy for rolling chitosan films to become a hollow nerve guidance channels. (A) By tailoring the degree of acetylation (DA) when modifying the number of conjugated acetyl groups, the degradation rate of the films can be adjusted. (B) A chitosan film of adjusted DA further provides a valuable substrate for seeding aligned Schwann cells (SCs) and bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs), both candidate cells for peripheral nerve tissue engineering.
