Morphological changes in kidney tissues and increased resistance of IPC kidneys to subsequent I/R insult. Mice were subjected to either 30 minutes of bilateral renal ischemia (IPC) or a sham-operation (non-IPC) on day 0. At 8 days after initial surgery, pre-IPC or non-IPC mice were exposed to either a further 30 minutes of bilateral renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) or sham-operation (Sham). 24 hours after second surgery plasma creatinine concentrations (a) and morphological changes (b) were determined. (c) Eight days after I/R, kidneys were harvested and kidney sections were PAS- and Masson's trichrome-stained. In Masson's trichrome-stained tissues areas of collagen deposition appeared in blue color. Images were taken from the outer medulla of kidneys. Scale bar: 50 μm.
