Methods Six-week randomised, single-blind multicentre study.
Participants Outpatients fulfilling DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder, with a score of at least 17 on the HDRS-17.
Age range: 18-65 years old.
Exclusion criteria: any physical illness or psychiatric diagnosis beside depressive disorder, drug or alcohol abuse, organic mental disorder, pregnancy or lactation, use of any medication except incidental anagesic and current psychotherapy
Interventions Fluoxetine: 15 participants.
Moclobemide: 15 participants.
Amitriptyline: 15 participants.
Fluoxetine dose: 20 mg/day.
Moclobemide dose: 240 mg/day.
Amitriptyline dose: 100 mg/day.
Outcomes Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, CGI.
