ELP-functionalized gold nanorods formed composite matrices after incubation at temperatures above the ELP Tt. Near-infrared laser illumination induced hyperthermia by gold nanorod plasmon resonance, which in turn induced temperature-triggered release of 17-AAG drug mediated by ELP aggregation, resulting in significantly enhanced cell death as compared to either hyperthermia or drug treatment alone.
