Phase extension from 30 to 22.5 Å resolution with concurrent imposition of (a) local fivefold and (b) local sixfold symmetry on the hexavalent morphological unit. The application of local fivefold symmetry enhances the substructure in the hexavalent unit whereas the sixfold symmetry results in a total loss of substructure. (c) Four cycles of conventional icosahedral refinement after the sixfold local averaging regenerate the fivefold substructure in the hexavalent unit.
