Assessment of total CD68+ immunoreactivity surrounding intracortical microelectrodes over time. Highest levels of CD68+ immunoreactivity were observed at two weeks post implantation, with significantly lower CD68+ immunoreactivity observed beyond two weeks (A–E). Co-localization of CFP+ and CD68+ immunoreactivity within the total CD68+ population demonstrated that approximately 70% of CD68+ cells at two weeks were comprised of blood borne macrophages (F/G). scale bar = 100 μm; significance p < 0.05; n = 4–7 per cohort.
