Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) is the spatial analysis of DTI data that compares one group to another. Thus this figure does not represent a single white matter skeleton of one brain but, rather, it depicts the overall mean of each group (in this case, abusive head trauma [AHT] cases and the comparison cohort) transposed on each other, with the red/yellow depicting significant group differences (p<0.05). Compared with the case controls, AHT cases had significantly reduced axial diffusivity in regions associated with auditory and visual systems expanding into the executive functioning systems. In contrast, there were no significant differences in radial diffusivity or fractional anisotropy, and there was relative sparing of central structures involving the motor system and central crossing structures.
