pol V Mut (UmuD′2C-RecA-ATP) is a stand-alone DNA polymerase able to synthesize DNA in the absence of RecA*.
A, pol V Mut is formed by incubating pol V with RecA* bound to resin and removing the resin-bound RecA*, leaving pol V Mut in solution. B, pol V Mut formed with wild-type RecA copies DNA, whereas pol V Mut formed with Devoret's SOS nonmutagenic RecA1730(S117F) cannot copy DNA. Red circle, RecA; inverted blue triangle, ATP or ATPγS. nt, nucleotides.
