Influx rates (Vin) of ampicillin and benzylpenicillin in LA51A ΔompF (A) or ΔompC (B) in the presence of ethanol or urea at given concentrations. Co is the substrate concentration used in the assay. The assay was conducted with 5 mm (open bars) or 50 mm (filled bars) potassium/phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 5 mm MgCl2. Data represent averages of quadruplicate measurements with standard deviations. Asterisks show the presence of statistically significant changes (p < 0.05 according to Student's t test) in comparison with the data with no additives.
