gB843 rescues fusion when EBV gL is replaced by rhesus gL. CHO-K1 cells were transiently transfected with the T7 luciferase plasmid and a vector plasmid (control) or with the T7 luciferase plasmid, gH, and EBV gB or gB843 together with EBV gL or rhesus gL in the presence (A) or absence (B) of gp42. Transfected CHO-K1 cells were overlaid with Daudi B cells (A) or epithelial cells (B) expressing T7 polymerase and were monitored for luciferase activity after 24 h. Luciferase activity was normalized to that of cells with wt EBV gH/gL levels, which was set at 100%. The data are means plus standard errors of the means for three independent experiments.
