Competition experiments to assess the relative ease of addition of alcohols of differing steric bulk to the benzyne 10. An authentic sample of each of the four alkoxyarene (ROAr) products was prepared by heating 9 in the appropriate neat alcohol. The products were obtained in the following yields after chromatographic purification: R = Me (30%), R = Et (86%), R = i-Pr (83%), and R = t-BuOH (11, Figure 1b, 62%).
