Figure 3. — The distribution of data for Holocephalii (chimaeras) and elasmobranchii (sharks and rays) subclasses of chondrichthyan fishes does not always reflect their species distribution. The number of species represented in GenBank is representative of the actual species distribution but the amount of data in GenBank is not. Holocephalan data forms the majority of the NCBI Gene, GenBank, Genome Survey Sequence (GSS) and UniProt TrEMBL databases. The number of Short Reach Archive (SRA) experiments and EST sequences in nearly equal for each subclass and the remaining databases are primarily populated by elasmobranch data.
