(A–D) Cortical boutons (*) are filled with DAB precipitate resulting from transport of FluoroRuby. Internal structures in the boutons were obscured by the DAB precipitate, but round synaptic vesicles could often appear negatively stained within the profiles. Postsynaptic densities were typically prominent (located between the white arrowheads). The postsynaptic targets of these cortical boutons were dendrites (green shading).
