(A) Representative photomicrographs of spine density on second order apical dendritic branches of CA3 neurons (100x). Quantification of the total number of basal dendritic spines per µm (B) in male and female rats exposed to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) compared to controls (Veh). Male rats exposed to DEHP showed a significant reduction in spine density on CA3 apical dendrites compared to male controls. Arrows in the DEHP-male image show regions of reduced dendritic spine density. There was no significant effect of DEHP treatment on CA3 apical spine density in female rats compared to controls.
