Citrobacter rodentium (CR) binding to the luminal surface of the large intestine in a susceptible host can influence the epigenetic signaling within the stem (green) and/or progenitor (blue) cells to promote inflammation and EMT. The diagram demonstrates a variety of effector pathways for EMT as well as the downstream consequences related to either local invasion or distant metastasis.
