Figure 1

(A) and (B) illustrate the two reaction topologies of diffusing morphogens that give rise to RD models. In Activator-Inhibitor models (A) the activator morphogen activates itself and its fast diffusing inhibitor, resulting in in phase waves of activator and inhibitor concentration. In Substrate-Depletion models (B) the activator activates itself and consumes its fast diffusing substrate (i.e. it inhibits its activator), resulting in out of phase waves of activator and substrate concentration.
