Experimental set-up of the tensile tests. A stick insect (black) adheres upside down on the underside of the latex membrane (light grey) and the objective of an epi-microscope (dark grey) is focused on one contact area between an arolium and the latex membrane. During the tensile tests, the latex membrane is stretched through rotation of the two bars and the elongations of the latex membrane and the arolium contact area are recorded.
