The middle row schematizes the activity of orientation-sensitive neurons (dark gray to black indicates activity of a horizontally-tuned cell, light gray to white indicates activity of a vertically tuned cell). The top row schematizes the activity of neurons that represent surfaces with perceived brightness. Judgments of target offset are based on the top row activities.
