Stem cell hierarchy. Pluripotent stem cells have the capacity for self-renewal and only exist in an early stage of embryogenesis. They give rise to all types of more specialized multipotent stem cells of the adult organism. Multipotent stem cells also show a self-renewal capacity; however, they are committed to produce only a restricted range of adult somatic cells and terminally differentiated progeny.
