Figure.

Of 1,656 licensed group child care centers in New York City, 8 were in census tracts with unreliable census data. Of the remaining 1,648 centers in tracts with reliable population data, 650 were in high-poverty neighborhoods (300 in DPHO and 350 in non-DPHO catchment areas). Of these centers, 260 were randomly selected, stratified by DPHO (130) and non-DPHO (130) catchment areas. Twenty-six of these centers were ineligible, and 58 centers declined to participate in the center component of the study. This resulted in 176 centers participating in the center component. Of the 176, 66 declined to participate in the classroom component of the study. This resulted in 110 centers participating in the classroom component of the study.

Selection of New York City (NYC) licensed group child care centers for Center Evaluation Component (fall 2009) and Classroom Evaluation Component (spring 2010) selected through a stratified sampling approach. Abbreviation: DPHO, District Public Health Office.
