Methods of establishing preclinical mucositis models and treatments tested in these models. The diagram illustrates the established preclinical mucositis models used to test the efficacy of different mucositis treatments. These preclinical models are created in rat, mouse, hamster, or rabbit species. Methods used to induce mucositis include radiation, chemotherapy, chemoradiation, or sialoadenectomy. To investigate the effects of mucositis treatments on proliferation of solid tumors, researchers also use a solid tumor xenograft animal model, in which mucositis is induced by chemotherapy and/or radiation.
