(a) Trajectories of hatchlings acoustically tracked from two nesting beaches (stars) with mean current flow vectors plotted during the tracking period (26 Sept–17 Oct). Flow vector length corresponds to current speed. Finer scale insets are also included to provide a more detailed view of the tracks. The 50, 250 and 500 m depth contours are also plotted (light–dark). Top inset: hatchlings maintained fairly consistent headings away from the northwestern beach until reaching distances of ca 9–12 km when currents flowing broadly NNW started to transport hatchlings offshore in this direction. Bottom inset: hatchlings travelled ca 3–6 km offshore from the southern beach until currents flowing broadly west transported them along the coast in this direction. (Online version in colour.)
