Updated proposal for the degradation pathway of mercaptosuccinate in V. paradoxus B4. First, mercaptosuccinate is converted to sulfinosuccinate by the mercaptosuccinate dioxygenase characterized in this study. Then, sulfinosuccinate spontaneously decomposes to succinate and sulfite. Succinate can eventually enter the central metabolism and serves as carbon source, whereas sulfite has to be detoxified, which is probably achieved by the previously identified molybdopterin oxidoreductase.
