The match locations and the leftmost $Δ V_{c u r r}$ value are known. The $Δ V_{c u r r}$ value for a particular column is found using the table in Figure 3. The input is the $Δ H_{p r e v}$ value in the same column and the $Δ V_{c u r r}$ value in the column to the left, except, when there is a match, the value in the column to the left is treated as a $\max$ and, starting with Step 3, if the value in the column to the left is not assigned, it is treated as mid. $Δ H_{p r e v}$ ^†is a modification of $Δ H_{p r e v}$ in which all Match positions have been changed to $\max$ and all values less than mid have been changed to mid. The $Δ H_{c u r r}$ value for a particular column is found using the transpose of the table in Figure 3. The input is the $Δ H_{p r e v}$ ^†in the same column and the $Δ V_{c u r r}$ value in the column to the left
