Data smashing: (a) determining the similarity between two data streams is key to any data mining process, but relies heavily on human-prescribed criteria. (b) Data smashing first encodes each data stream, then collides one with the inverse of the other. The randomness of the resulting stream reflects the similarity of the original streams, leading to a cascade of downstream applications involving classification, decision and optimization.
