Metabolic trapping of ¹⁸F-FDG: The inflammatory active cells take up ¹⁸F-FDG via GLUT1/3. Phosphorylation by hexokinase in the cytosol yields ¹⁸F-FDG-6-Phosphate which cannot be further processed by the metabolic machinery of the cell, effectively trapping ¹⁸F-FDG.
