The curved line was calculated using equations 1–3 with N = 93. ∂R_h/∂f_PPII for a statistical coil was estimated empirically by calculating the change in R_h and f_PPII for the incremental change in S_PPII of 0 to 0.01. ∂R_h/∂f_PPII for wild type was estimated by a similar method. First, the wild type R_h (32.8 Å) was used to calculate a corresponding S_PPII (S_PPII,wt) using equations 1 and 2. Then ∂R_h/∂f_PPII for the wild type was estimated by calculating the change in R_h and f_PPII for the incremental change in S_PPII from S_PPII,wt to S_PPII,wt + 0.01.
